The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and the Chennai Corporation sealed 25 buildings in Ranganathan Street and Usman Road on October 31, a day before the Madras high court was to decide on initiating contempt proceedings against officials for failure to comply with earlier orders against unauthorised buildings. The Supreme Court on Friday directed the civic agencies to stop further sealing or demolition and asked the Madras high court to pass appropriate orders in its next hearing on November 30. Members of the association, who expressed solidarity with fellow traders, went into a huddle on Saturday evening to discuss further legal course of action. Their livelihood is at stake," said Chitrai Pandian, president, Ranganathan Street Merchants Association. More than 100 traders are tenants doing business in these sealed buildings. Only a handful of buildings are owned by owner-traders. "We will move the high court to ensure that the sealed shops are opened for trade.
